2017-2018 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Are you a rising 4th or 5th grade student?
Are you a voracious Reader?
Do you excel at games like Jeopardy?
Do you love competition?

.....then the Reading Bowl is for you!!

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th and 5th graders at Villa Rica Elementary. The competition was created by Helen Ruffin, a Media Specialist in Dekalb County. She served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children's Book Award nominee program. This literature program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia's College of Education. The program inspired her to use the nominee books to encourage her students to read.

The "bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz-like format. There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process.

The team is sponsored by Ms. Williams (Media Specialist, Mrs. Cano (1st Grade teacher), Mrs. Bell (5th Grade teacher) and Mrs. Kauffman (Gifted Teacher). Official HRRB rules state that only 10 students can be on the team. We select the 'top ten' out of those interested based on the following criteria:

★ Amount of books read
★ AR Quiz Score
★ 10 Questions/Answers submitted via Google Forms for each book read
★ Practice Attendance

Practice dates and times will be announced when school begins.

2017-2018 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Book List is below. Students are encouraged to read any of the books over the Summer Break.
