Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Are you in 4th or 5th grade?
Are you a voracious Reader?
Do you excel at games like Jeopardy?
Do you love competition?

.....then the Reading Bowl is for you!!

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th and 5th graders at Villa Rica Elementary. The competition was created by Helen Ruffin, a Media Specialist in Dekalb County. She served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children's Book Award nominee program. This literature program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia's College of Education. The program inspired her to use the nominee books to encourage her students to read.

The "bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz-like format. There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process.

The team is sponsored by Ms. Williams (Media Specialist, Mrs. Cano (4th Grade teacher), Mrs. Bell (5th Grade teacher) and Mrs. Savidge (3rd Grade Teacher). Official HRRB rules state that only 10 students can be on the team. We select the 'top ten' out of those interested based on the following criteria:

★ Amount of books read
★ AR Quiz Score
★ 10 Questions/Answers submitted via Google Forms for each book read
★ Practice Attendance

Practice will be every other Thursday from 2:45-3:30 in the Media Center beginning in October.

Students may sign up at home or at school by visiting vre.carrollcountyschools.com. Find the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl link and complete the Sign Up Google Form. After a student has signed up, Permission Slips will be sent home for Parents to sign.
